Creation of the world
Genesis
1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was formless and empty, and darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3God said, “Let there be light!” And there was light. 4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light day, and the darkness he called night. There was evening and there was morning, the first day. 6God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7God made the firmament and separated the waters under the firmament from the waters above the firmament. And it was so. 8God called the firmament heaven. There was evening and there was morning, the second day. 9God said, “Let the waters under the firmament be gathered together into one place, and let dry land appear.” And it was so. 10God called the dry land earth, and the gathered waters he called seas. God saw that it was good. 11God said, “Let the earth produce vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees yielding fruit with their own seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And so it was. 12The earth produced vegetation: plants yielding seed according to their kind, each according to its kind, each according to its kind. God saw that it was good. 13There was evening and there was morning, the third day. 14God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and to mark seasons, days, and years. 15Let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And so it was. 16God made two great lights, the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. 17God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18to rule the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. 20And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” 21And God created great sea creatures and every living creature that moves with the waters, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 24And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creeping things, and wild animals.” And it was so. 25And God created wild animals, livestock, and creeping things according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness. Let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27So God created man in his own image; in the image of God he created him. Male and female he created them. 28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29Then God said, “I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it to be food for you. 30And to every living thing on the earth and to every bird of the air and to every living thing that moves on the earth, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31God saw everything he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their host. 2And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and on the seventh day God rested from all his work which he had made. 3And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it: because in it he had rested from all his work which God had made. 4Thus were the heavens and the earth created. >When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, 5and no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to till the ground. 6But the waters rose up from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 7Then the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. 8The Lord God planted a garden in Eden, eastward, and there he put the man he had formed. 9The Lord God made every tree grow out of the ground that was pleasant to the sight and good for food. In the middle of the garden he planted the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden. From there it divided into four heads. 11The name of the first is Pishon; it flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12The gold of that land is pure; bdellium and onyx are found there. 13The name of the second river is Gihon; it flows around the whole land of Cush. 14The name of the third river is Tigris; it flows east of Assyria. The fourth river is Euphrates. 15The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16The Lord God commanded the man, “You may freely eat from every tree of the garden, 17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for in the day you eat from it you will surely die.” 18Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him.” 19From the ground the Lord God formed every wild animal and every bird of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20The man gave names to all livestock, to all birds of the sky, and to every wild animal, but there was no helper for him. 21The Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept. He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. 22And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made a woman and brought her to him. 23Then the man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She will be called Woman, because she was taken from Man.” 24Therefore a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25The man and his wife were naked, but they were not ashamed of each other.
1Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” 2The woman replied, “We may eat fruit from any tree in the garden. 3But God has said, ‘You must not eat from the tree in the middle of the garden. You must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4The serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die! 5For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6The woman saw that the tree was good to eat, because it was pleasing to the eyes and a delight to the senses. She took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate it. 7The eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked. They wove fig leaves together and made themselves aprons. 8When they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9The Lord God called to the man and said, “Where are you?” 10He said, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself.” 11Then he said to him, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree about which I commanded you not to eat?” 12The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” 13Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” She said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14And the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed and outcast above all livestock and all wild animals. On your belly you will go and eat dust all the days of your life. 15I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” 16To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pain in pregnancy; in pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, but he will rule over you.” 17To the man he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat from it,’ cursed is the ground for your sake. In toil you will eat from it all the days of your life. 18Thorns and thistles it will bring forth for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you will return.” 20The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21The Lord God made coats of skins for the man and his wife and clothed them. 22Then the Lord God said, “The man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; but now, lest he put out his hand and also take of the tree of life and eat from it and live forever.” 23The Lord God sent him out of the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24He drove the man out, and at the east of the Garden of Eden he placed cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
1Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man from the Lord.” 2She also bore his brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3In time Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruits of the field. 4Abel offered the firstborn of his flock and fat. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and on his offering, 5but on Cain and on his offering he did not look with favor. Cain was very angry and his face fell. 6The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face fallen? 7If you do well, will I not accept you? But if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door, and its desire is for you; and you must master it.” 8Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out!” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. 9Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” 10He said to him, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11Now you are cursed from the ground, which opened its mouth to drink your brother’s blood from your hand. 12When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” 13Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14You are driving me out this day from the ground, and from your face I will be hidden. I will be a restless wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me.” 15But the Lord said to him, “No, this will not happen, for whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” The Lord set a mark on Cain so that no one who finds him will kill him. 16So Cain went away from the Lord and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. 17Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. He built a city and named it Enoch after his son. 18To Enoch was born Irad; Irad fathered Mehujael; Mehujael fathered Methusael; and Methusael fathered Lamech. 19Lamech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah and the name of the other Zillah. 20Adah bore Jabal, who became the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21His brother’s name was Jubal; he became the father of all who play the harp and flute. 22Zillah also bore Tubal-cain. He was a forger, an expert in all kinds of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain’s sister was Naamah. 23Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice, wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! I have killed the man who wounded me, the young man who struck me. 24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” 25Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, for she said, “God has appointed me another offspring instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26To Seth also there was born a son, and he named him Enosh. Then people began to call on the name of the Lord.
Family tree from Adam to Noah
